Read this when you feel like skipping breakfast- Body Positivity Tip #1

I feel like it is very common among people to skip meals, especially breakfast. News flash, this isn’t a healthy way to live! You’re restricting yourself and your body does not deserve that. I decided to start out this series with this topic since I find it to be very common.

Here are my tips for when you want to skip breakfast or even if you think it’s too early in the day to eat:

The first step to try and not skip a meal is to reframe your mind.

Remind yourself that eating breakfast is going to give you fuel to start your day! These calories are important to fuel and energize you. Calories are energy, not the enemy. You should reframe your mind to see them as a positive rather than a negative.

Feeling the need to skip meals has to do with your mind and the relationship you currently have towards food. Working on this to improve it and be more positive will help you overcome the feeling of needing to skip meals. Calories are important, but I find it also helpful to look at food as nutritious and healthy for your body. You might not be that hungry when you wake up, but giving your body vitamins and nutrients it needs will make you look and feel better.

Becoming educated about nutrition.

I find that people use excuses a lot when trying to justify skipping meals and those excuses are actually myths. Eating one meal is not going to make you gain weight nor affect the progress you have made thus far. Eating that meal will actually help you to burn fat and gain muscle more easily than it is to starve yourself. When you starve yourself, your body actually holds onto the fat it has because it’s not sure when the next meal will be. Starving yourself or restricting is going to make it difficult to lose fat, and it is also a draining and toxic habit.

How to start eating.

If you really feel like not eating, try having small meals to start your day. Gradually, as you become more comfortable and used to eating in the morning, increase your meal size. It’s great to start your day with a healthy meal. This could be anything! I think it really helps to have a healthy breakfast rather than skipping one entirely. Your body needs the nutrients from the foods. We want to be healthy and strong!

Some great ideas for a smaller breakfast would be a protein bar, oatmeal, toast with peanut butter and banana, avocado toast. The list goes on for what you can have. I want to also let you know that I am not a nutritionist, and that everyone’s needs are different.

I also want to remind you though that the smaller “meals” I mentioned are not normal portions. These are smaller portions that are a stepping stone for you to eventually eat normal portions. It is not healthy either to stick to these smaller portions. We want to work our way up in a comfortable process for you! I know it can be very difficult to go from not eating breakfast at all to suddenly having two servings of oatmeal with bananas and apples. Working your way up gradually will help you feel better, avoid feelings of guilt, and help you sustain the habit longer.

Lastly, remind yourself that you are strong and beautiful. You are fueling your body with nutrients and vitamins it needs to keep you moving, give you clear skin, build muscle, grow your hair, etc. You can get through this and find your balance.
