Myth #3: “Starving Myself Will Be Easier and Make Me Lose Weight Faster”

Having an eating disorder is an easy and quick way to lose weight. This mindset is completely wrong, and here’s why:

Eating disorders aren’t something you usually “choose” to partake in. Everyone’s disordered eating develops for different reasons, but mine was a coping mechanism and a way to have control in my life. Having an eating disorder is already hard enough, and what made me push through it was that it was the only way I knew how to cope. I doubt trying to lose weight quickly will be a strong enough reason for you to go down this dark road.

Eating disorders are glamorized in society. The hard truth is that eating disorders will take up your entire life. Every thought that comes into your head will be regarding food, you lose your period, your hair falls out, you have no energy to even talk to your friends. Losing weight is not easy, and it’s definitely a lot harder through an eating disorder.

There are many health risks associated with disordered eating that could even lead to hospitalization and death in extreme cases. It is actually a fact that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. You may be thinking “that won’t happen to me”. You don’t know that. You don’t know how your body is going to react or how extreme your mental health will get. A common belief is that you are control of your eating disorder, but in reality, your eating disorder is in control of you.

I can assure you that even if you lose the weight this way, you won’t be happy with the end result. It won’t be good enough. You’ll never be good enough according to that voice in your head.

My eating disorder was one of the worst things I have ever gone through in my life, and I would never wish it upon anyone. It was isolating, exhausting, and depressing. It was something that I struggled to overcome for years. I am blessed to be fully recovered and have an amazing relationship with food, but it was a battle to get here.
